A devoted Knights supporter is recovering in hospital after a near-fatal car crash. The incident occurred during a team farewell event, leaving the fan with significant injuries.

Chris Clancy, 48, recounted the terrifying experience from his hospital bed. He believed he was going to die. A speeding car headed directly for him, allowing no time to react.

Mr. Clancy is an assistant manager at Kennards Hire in Heatherbrae. Moreover, he is a long-time, foundation supporter of the Knights. He was among thousands of fans cheering on their team.

The incident unfolded on Newcastle Link Road in Wallsend. This area was crowded with supporters waving goodbye to the team bus on Saturday morning. Mr. Clancy and his two nephews were standing near the Transfield Drive roundabout.

Suddenly, a P-plate driver accelerated through the roundabout. Mr. Clancy witnessed the car speed up dramatically. The driver reportedly intended to “show off” by putting his foot down.

Consequently, the vehicle careened into the gathered crowd. Mr. Clancy suffered a broken left collarbone and a fractured right foot. He also sustained broken ribs and several small spinal fractures.

Currently, Mr. Clancy is receiving treatment at John Hunter Hospital. He is scheduled for surgery either Saturday night or Sunday. Despite the severe injuries from the near-fatal car crash, he has a special request for his doctors: to complete his procedures before Sunday’s grand final kick-off at 7:30 pm.
